New direct from plasma cfDNA test provides results in three hours.
Since 2011 the NHS has been using cell free DNA (cfDNA) in fetal sex testing to identify pregnancies at high risk of sex-linked disorders. This test is done by extracting cfDNA from maternal plasma: a process that is slowing down results for patients.
Nonacus has developed a product that removes the need to extract cfDNA and instead test direct from plasma.
In a first of its kind test, Nonacus has been working with leading NHS laboratory to determine if this product could reduce turnaround times and improve resource efficiency.
Below is a summary of the results from the validation:
- Removal of the 2-hour extraction step streamlines the protocol and reduces consumables and labour costs
- The pre-plated assay design allows a rapid result turnaround of approximately 3 hours from sample receipt
- The potential for same-day reporting would improve the current turnaround time
- 1-13 samples can be tested per run, increasing throughput and reducing hands-on time
- Reduced plasma volume required allows for a smaller blood collection or for remaining sample to be available for further testing if required
